  • Why did you set this up?
    • We were fed up of the high price of storage and we believe that the world is changing to a more community-focused society.
  • Why choose Storage Shepherd?
    • Because compared to traditional self-storage companies, we are cheaper, greener & closer to you.
    • Because we know most people need storage at the big moments in their lives. So whether you are moving house or going through a difficult time, we believe that people helping each other out is a much better solution to storage than a cold warehouse.

Hosting

  • Do you provide insurance for my home?
    • We provide it as an option. Most household insurance will cover you anyway but you can purchase extra cover. We work alongside Guardhog Insurance Company who are underwritten by Hiscox LTD. Simply give them a visit and purchase insurance for the dates in which storage will be in your home. Take a look at www.guardhog.com.
  • What if, at the end of the agreement, the stuff hasn’t been collected?
    • If you do find yourself in a difficult situation like this, you can contact us and we will sort out the issue for you.
  • I can no longer host my renter’s possessions… What should I do?
    • If you can no longer host your renter’s possessions & complete the rental period, then please contact your renter immediately to arrange pick up. You will receive partial payment due to the incomplete period & the rest will be refunded back to the renter.

      If the renter is unable to pick up their possessions, then you will be responsible for finding another storage space to fulfill the period. You must notify the renter immediately. You will not receive compensation as the renter has paid with the expectation that their possessions will be stored safely & securely at your advertised space.

  • When will I get paid?
    • We release the payments every month but if the rental period is less than a month then you will receive your money at the end of the rental period.
  • Do I have to pay taxes for this?
    • From April 2017 onwards, there is a tax break for “micro-entrepreneurs” such as yourself that use sharing economy platforms like Storage Shepherd on the first £1,000 you earn per year. In other words, you may not have to, but we recommend you seek advice regarding tax liability if you exceed the £1,000 threshold per year through Storage Shepherd. You are responsible for declaring any earnings you make from Storage Shepherd to HMRC.
  • Is it free for me to list my space?
    • Yes! It is free to advertise your space. However, if you would like your space to be in the featured section, there is an additional one-off fee of £4.99, lasting until the space has been rented.
  • What space can I rent out?
    • Any space that you have! It could be a space in the corner, in the wardrobe or even an entire room! You can rent out your car parking space too. We also recommend that you advertise for multiple listings if you have a big space. That way, you can rent out to more renters at the same time to increase your revenue!
  • Do I need to be verified?
    • This is for security & insurance measures & will give the renter a piece of mind when storing their possessions at your space.
  • What are my responsibilities & obligations?
    • You are expected to take care of your renter’s possessions as you would your own. If the possessions are damaged in your space, during the rental period, then you may be subject to compensation fees.
  • Am I allowed to do this?
    • Yes! We just ask that you get landlord’s permission if you do not own the property. This is one of our most important conditions.
  • How much should I charge?
    • Our system offers a recommended price based on the size of your space and your reviews. This means it is in your best interest to get great reviews from the storers as it means you can charge more!

Renting

  • What if I want to end my pre-agreed storage period early?
    • You will still need to pay the total of the rental period upfront. This payment is not refundable unless we have decided otherwise. You should then contact the host to arrange a pick-up.
  • What if I need something back from storage?
    • Simply arrange to meet with the host if you’d like items back from storage. Hosts will explain what type of access they offer on their profile.
  • Do you insure my storage?
    • We provide insurance up to the value of £500 included in our transaction fee. We work alongside Guardhog Insurance Company who are underwritten by Hiscox LTD. Take a look here.
  • Will my possessions be safe?
    • Security is our priority. This is why we use a number of security measures to look after your belongings including integrated profile & review systems, background checks and  insurance cover.
  • Will I need to provide my own boxes/luggage?
    • Currently, you will need to provide your own. However, we are looking to provide alternative packaging options in case you need it.
  • Can I see the space before I pay for it?
    • Yes! You are able to cancel the rental agreement by 5 p.m. if the space is not as advertised.
  • What items can I store?
    • Anything you want as long as they don’t pose a safety hazard to the host & their property & are legal. If you store the following items, you will forfeit the insurance that you may have opted for & will invalidate any future claims that you may make: drugs, flammable, toxic, corrosive, infectious or hazardous material, perishable food products, animals & plants.We also suggest not storing the following items: high value goods (such as jewelry, antiques, technology, etc.), money, important documents & fragile/sentimental items.

Verified & Insured
